RESUMO

The prediction of magnetic phase transitions often requires model Hamiltonians to describe the necessary magnetic interactions. The advance of machine learning provides an opportunity to build a unified approach that can treat various magnetic systems without proposing new model Hamiltonians. Here, we develop such an approach by proposing a novel set of descriptors that describes the magnetic interactions and training the artificial neural network (ANN) that plays the role of a universal magnetic Hamiltonian. We then employ this approach and Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the magnetic phase transition of two-dimensional monolayer chromium trihalides using the trained ANNs as energy calculator. We show that the machine-learning-based approach shows advantages over traditional methods in the investigation of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase transitions, demonstrating its potential for other magnetic systems.

Background: The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes the disease COVID-19, has caused a pandemic that has rapidly affected the whole world and caused a significant threat to public health. The aim of this study was to investigate and analyze the social and occupational effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in three different countries: China, Spain, and Cuba. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was designed to assess the social and occupational effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in MS patients in these three countries, using a 25-item anonymous online questionnaire, structured into three sections. Quantitative data are expressed as mean (standard deviation), and quantitative data as absolute frequency and percentage. Results: A total of 361 participants responded to the questionnaire: 194 from China, 104 from Spain, and 63 from Cuba. We found no cases of COVID-19 among Chinese patients with MS, and few cases in Spain and Cuba. Respondents reported different levels of impact on relationships with friends, family, and colleagues, and patients in all three countries described increased use of digital or social media platforms. Spanish patients reported a significantly less negative impact than those in Cuba and China. Mental and cognitive effects were similar in all three countries, although China seemed to have a better situation. We also found that the time spent exercising decreased at specific points during the pandemic, but with few changes in dietary habits. Patients reported little or no change in their means of transport in all three countries. Most patients in all three countries reported little or no physical deterioration, especially in Chinese patients (82.47%), compared to the Spanish (70.20%) and Cuban respondents (73.02%). In general, patients from all three countries demonstrated confidence in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic, although to a lesser extent among Spanish respondents. Conclusions: During the pandemic, family support was more effective in China than in Cuba and Spain. Neither COVID-19 infections nor the number of MS relapses increased significantly during lockdown in any of the three countries. Regarding their economic situation, Spanish MS patients reported a significantly less severe negative impact than those in Cuba and China. Patients from all three countries used digital or social media platforms more frequently, probably to maintain personal relationships. Chinese and Cuban respondents were more confident of the control of the pandemic than the Spanish, who were more pessimistic.


Introducción: El nuevo coronavirus de tipo 2, causante del síndrome respiratorio agudo severo o COVID-19, se ha expandido rápidamente a nivel mundial, convirtiéndose en una grave amenaza para la salud pública en forma de pandemia. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar los efectos sociolaborales de la pandemia de COVID-19 en pacientes con esclerosis múltiple (EM) en 3 países diferentes (China, España y Cuba). Métodos: Diseñamos un estudio transversal para valorar los efectos sociolaborales de la pandemia de COVID-19 en pacientes con EM procedentes de China, España y Cuba mediante un cuestionario digital de 25 preguntas divididas en 3 apartados. Los datos cuantitativos se expresan como medias y desviaciones estándar, mientras que los datos cualitativos se expresan mediante valores y porcentajes. Resultados: Un total de 361 pacientes respondieron al cuestionario (194 de China, 104 de España y 63 de Cuba). No encontramos ningún paciente chino con EM que hubiera padecido COVID-19, y los casos diagnosticados en España y Cuba fueron muy infrecuentes. A raíz de la pandemia, se observaron cambios en las relaciones con amigos, familiares y compañeros; además, los pacientes con EM usaron plataformas digitales y redes sociales con más frecuencia en los 3 países. El impacto negativo fue significativamente menor en España que en Cuba o China. Los efectos mentales y cognitivos de la pandemia fueron similares en los 3 países, aunque parece que la situación previa era mejor en China. Igualmente, observamos que el tiempo dedicado al ejercicio se redujo en momentos específicos durante la pandemia. Por el contrario, no se detectaron grandes cambios en los hábitos alimentarios. Los pacientes de los 3 países consideraron que no se produjeron cambios en su medio de transporte, o que estos fueron escasos. La mayoría de los pacientes ha experimentado poco o ningún deterioro físico, particularmente los pacientes chinos (82,47%) en comparación con los españoles (70,20%) y cubanos (73,02%). En líneas generales, todos los pacientes se mostraron esperanzados en superar la pandemia, aunque los pacientes españoles en menor grado. Conclusiones: Durante la pandemia, el apoyo familiar fue más importante en China que en Cuba o España. En ninguno de los 3 países se observó un aumento significativo en el número de casos de COVID-19 ni de brotes o recaídas durante el periodo de confinamiento. En términos económicos, los pacientes con EM españoles sufrieron un impacto negativo significativamente menor que los cubanos y chinos. Todos los pacientes usaron plataformas digitales o redes sociales con más frecuencia, probablemente con el fin de mantener relaciones personales. Los pacientes chinos y cubanos mostraron mayor confianza en el control de la pandemia que los españoles, que resultaron ser más pesimistas.

OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the presence of sleep disturbances and their relationship with clinical and demographic variables in patients with MS, with a view to establishing correlations between the different variables and the frequency of sleep disturbances. METHODS: The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to detect sleep disorders. We contacted patients treated at the MS unit and distributed a questionnaire (PSQI) to 221 patients, receiving 142 usable questionnaires between 8 and 30 September 2019. RESULTS: The prevalence of patients with sleep disturbances in our study was 74.7% (73.7% in women and 76.8% in men). Therefore, sleep disorders are pervasive in patients with MS, with 3 out of 4 patients experiencing them, a higher rate than that observed in the population without the disease. The frequency of sleep disorders gradually increased in line with age. In the 2 age groups analyzed, 44-54 years and 55-68 years, the proportion of moderate and severe sleep disorders was 42.8% and 53.9%, respectively. Moderate and severe sleep disturbances were observed in 27.5%, 44.7%, and 58.3% of patients with Expanded Disability Status Scale scores of 0-3, 3-6, and >6, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that sleep disorders are more common in patients with MS than in other populations. Patients with secondary progressive forms of MS more frequently present sleep disturbances, while patients with primary progressive forms report them less frequently. Age and degree of disability were positively correlated with the prevalence and severity of sleep disorders in MS patients.

El confinamiento debido a la pandemia de la COVID-19, realizado a nivel mundial, ha tenido consecuencias casi siempre negativas en los pacientes con esclerosis múltiple (EM). OBJETIVO: Hemos comparado el efecto sociolaboral que el confinamiento ha podido tener en pacientes con EM de dos poblaciones tan diferentes como son España y China. MÉTODO: Se elaboraron unos cuestionarios a lo que respondieron un grupo de pacientes de EM que son revisados en la unidad de EM del hospital Vithas (Fundación DINAC) en Sevilla, y pacientes con EM atendidos en varias provincias de China durante el mes de abril de 2020, con el objetivo de analizar las diferencias y similitudes del efecto sociolaboral entre ambas poblaciones. Para llevar a cabo este análisis se creó una base de datos que se analizó posteriormente. RESULTADOS: La población china tiene una mayor proporción de pacientes más jóvenes y no hay diferencia respecto al género. La mayoría de las variables estudiadas se comportaron de igual forma en los pacientes con EM tanto españoles como chinos. Los pacientes españoles presentaron menos impacto (30,7%) en su situación socioeconómica que los chinos (44%), p < 0,05. No hubo diferencias importantes en el resto de las variables entre las dos poblaciones. Las redes sociales fueron muy utilizadas en la mayoría de los enfermos de ambas poblaciones. CONCLUSIONES: Los pacientes con EM padecen de forma muy similar las consecuencias de la pandemia en su situación sociolaboral y utilizan de forma parecida las redes sociales y el apoyo de la familia. Los pacientes españoles disfrutan de más estabilidad económica, probablemente gracias al apoyo social que reciben


The confinement due to the global COVID-19 pandemic has almost had negative consequences in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). OBJECTIVE: We wanted to compare the socio-labor effect of confinement in two populations as different as Spain and China, in patients with MS. METHOD: Questionnaires were applied to a group of MS patients who have been reviewed in the MS unit of the Vithas hospital (DINAC Foundation) in Seville, and MS patients attended in various provinces of China during the month of April 2020, with the aim of analyzing the differences and similarities of the socio-labor effect between both populations. To carry out this analysis, a database was created and subsequently analyzed. RESULTS: The Chinese population has a higher proportion of younger patients and there is no difference regarding gender. Most of the variables studied behaved the same way in both Spanish and Chinese MS patients. Spanish patients had less impact (30.7%) on their socio-economic situation than Chinese (44%), P < .05. There were no important differences in the rest of the variables between the two populations. Social networks were widely used in the majority of patients in both populations. CONCLUSIONS: MS patients suffer in a very similar way from the consequences of the pandemic on their socio-labor situation and similarly use social networks and family support. Spanish patients seem to have more economic stability, which may be due to social economic support

OBJECTIVE: Increasing evidence indicated that N6-methyl-adenosine (M6A) played a key role in a variety of pathophysiological processes. Methylases could promote the processing of mature mi-RNA in a M6A-dependent manner, thereby participating in the pathological cells' occurrence and development. However, the regulatory mechanism of M6A in atherosclerosis (AS) was still unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantificational Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the relative expression levels of M6A, methyltransferase, demethylase transferase, miR-19a and other mi-RNA in atherosclerotic vascular endothelial cells (ASVEC). Cell Counting Kit (CCK8) was used to detect cell proliferation, the expression of PCNA was measured by Western Blot (WB) and qRT-PCR. Transwell assays were used to detect the invasion ability of ASVEC. Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) was used to detect the binding of METTL14 to DGCR8. RNA Immunoprecipitation (RIP) was used to detect the binding of METTL14 to miR-19a. RESULTS: M6A modification levels and METTL14 methylation transferase were significantly overexpressed in ASVEC. Silencing METTL14 inhibited the proliferation and invasion of ASVEC. Low expression of METTL14 suppressed the binding of methylated RNA and RNA splicing related protein DGCR8. Moreover, silencing METTL14 significantly inhibited the expression of miR-19a while promoted the expression of primary pre-miR-19a. However, high expression of METTL14 obviously increased the expression of DGCR8 and methylated m6A. Furthermore, silencing miR-19a inhibited the proliferation and invasion of ASVEC. CONCLUSIONS: METTL14 increased the M6A modification of pri-miR-19a and promoted the processing of mature miR-19a, thus promoting the proliferation and invasion of ASVEC. These results suggested that METTL14/ M6A/ miR-19a signaling pathway may be a new target for atherosclerosis treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the expression of JMJD3 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to further study its association with clinical features and prognosis of patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to examine the level of JMJD3 in 46 pairs of NSCLC tissues and para-cancerous specimens. The relationship between JMJD3 level and clinical features of NSCLC and patients' prognosis was analyzed. And JMJD3 expression in NSCLC cells was further verified by qRT-PCR. In addition, JMJD3 knockdown model was constructed using siRNA in cell lines including A549 and SPC-A1, and the effect of JMJD3 on the biological function of NSCLC cells was analyzed by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and transwell migration and invasive-ness assays. Lastly, Western blot was performed to explore the potential mechanism. RESULTS: In this investigation, qRT-PCR results indicated that JMJD3 expression in above-mentioned tumor tissues was conspicuously higher than that in normal tissues. In addition, compared with patients with low level of JMJD3, patients with high level of JMJD3 had a higher incidence of lymphatic metastasis and distant metastasis and a lower overall survival rate. Meanwhile, the proliferation, invasiveness and migratory capacity of cells in the sh-JMJD3 group was conspicuously decreased when compared with the cells in negative control group. Western Blot results indicated that the levels of key proteins in EMT signaling pathway such as E-cadherin, N-cadherin, Vimentin, TGF-ß, and MMP-9 were notably decreased in sh-JMJD3 group. Besides, the addition of TGF-ß cytokines synergistically promoted the malignant progression of NSCLC induced by JMJD3. CONCLUSIONS: JMJD3 expression was found conspicuously increased in NSCLC, which might be close relevant to NSCLC lymphatic or distant metastasis as well as patients' poor prognosis. Therefore, we speculated that JMJD3 could promote invasiveness and migratory capacity of non-small cell lung cancer cells by activating EMT process.

Desulfovibrio spp. is predominant member of sulphate-reducing bacteria in human gut microbiota. Previous studies indicated that the isolation of Desulfovibrio strains from human faecal samples is very important to study the roles of human intestinal Desulfovibrio spp. in maintaining healthy states or causing diseases, as well as defining their biological characteristics. However, there are very few reports describing the isolation of Desulfovibrio spp. from human faecal samples. In this study, faecal samples were inoculated into various media containing different components. The enriched culture communities were identified using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing analysis, enabling us to identify the specific components that enable the enrichment of Desulfovibrio. Using this information, we developed five specific media and identified an effective enrichment medium that produced the highest relative abundance of Desulfovibrio in communities cultured from four faecal samples (26·5, 73·5, 44·7 and 77·6% respectively). In addition, the major non-Desulfovibrio genera were identified. Finally, three species of Desulfovibrio, D. desulfuricans, D. piger and D. legallii were isolated, representing the first time that has D. legallii been isolated from a human gastrointestinal source. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: ost of the human intestinal bacteria have not been cultured because of lack of appropriate culture method and appropriate media. Desulfovibrio spp. is associated with several clinical conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, but until now there are very few reports describing the isolation of Desulfovibrio spp. from human faecal samples. In this study, 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing analysis was applied to screen appropriate enrichment media and selective cultivation of Desulfovibrio. This sequencing-based directed culture method described here can be used for the selective cultivation of gut bacteria of interest.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the characteristics of Helicobacter pylori resistance in China and the association between antibiotic resistance and several clinical factors. METHODS: H. pylori strains were collected from patients in 13 provinces or cities in China between 2010 and 2016. Demographic data including type of disease, geographic area, age, gender and isolation year were collected to analyse their association with antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance was detected using the Etest test and the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. RESULTS: H. pylori were successfully cultured from 1117 patients. The prevalence of metronidazole, clarithromycin (CLA), azithromycin, levofloxacin (LEV), moxifloxacin, amoxicillin (AMO), tetracycline and rifampicin resistance was 78.2, 22.1, 23.3, 19.2, 17.2, 3.4, 1.9 and 1.5%, respectively. No resistance to furazolidone was observed. The resistance rates to LEV and moxifloxacin were higher in strains isolated from patients with gastritis compared to those with duodenal ulcer and among women. Compared to patients ≥40 years old, younger patients exhibited lower resistance rates to CLA, azithromycin, LEV and moxifloxacin. The resistance rates to CLA and AMO were higher in strains isolated more recently, and we also found that the prevalence of resistance to metronidazole, CLA, azithromycin and AMO were significantly different among different regions of China. CONCLUSIONS: The resistance rates to metronidazole, CLA and LEV were high in China. Patient age, gender, disease and location were associated with the resistance of H. pylori to some antibiotics. Furazolidone, AMO and tetracycline are better choices for H. pylori treatment in China.

AIM: To explore the altered spontaneous cerebral activity patterns and impaired functional regions in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) based on the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) algorithm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with DR (mean age, 54.9±9.9 years; 11 females) and 17 healthy control subjects (54.8±5.7 years; 9 females) were prospectively studied. The DR patients underwent laboratory tests. All individuals underwent a neuropsychological test. The differences in the ALFF values between the two groups were compared. The relationships between ALFF values and clinical measurements were analysed using a multiple-factor analysis. RESULTS: Compared to the controls, the DR group showed significantly increased ALFF values in the bilateral occipital gyrus, right lingual gyrus, and precuneus, and decreased values in the right posterior/anterior cerebellar lobe and the parahippocampal, fusiform, superior temporal, inferior parietal, and angular gyrus. Furthermore, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores were negatively correlated with decreased ALFF values in the right occipital lobe of the DR group, while increased ALFF values in the right precuneus and lingual gyrus were found to be positively correlated with glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with DR showed spontaneous cerebral activity abnormalities in many cerebral regions that were associated with cognitive impairments. HbA1c levels altered spontaneous cerebral activity in DR patients.

The depletion of amoxicillin (AMO) and its major metabolites, amoxicilloic acid (AMA) and amoxicillin-diketopiperazine-2',5'-dione (DIKETO) in the albumen, yolk and whole egg was studied after the oral dose of AMO (25 and 50 mg/kg body weight) to laying hens once per day for five consecutive days. Egg samples were prepared by a simple liquid-liquid extraction procedure with acetonitrile and saturated methylene chloride and analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The results showed that AMO, AMA and DIKETO residues were mainly distributed in the yolk, where particularly high concentrations of AMO and DIKETO were found, whereas the albumen contained high concentrations of AMA. This distribution suggested that AMO and DIKETO were depleted slowly in yolk, whereas AMA was depleted slowly in albumen. The amount of AMO residue positively correlated with the dose, and the theoretical withdrawal times, which were calculated based on the residue level falling below a safe limit, were 5.21 and 7.67 days at AMO doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg, respectively. Moreover, the theoretical withdrawal times for all residues in the whole egg were 8.00 and 9.11 days at doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg, respectively. Our findings suggested that 9 days was an appropriate withdrawal time for the use of AMO in laying hens.

In order to evaluate the effect of penile enhancement, we retrospectively reviewed the data of the patients operated with autologous dermal graft implantation combined with a modified penile degloving procedure. The patients with the complaints of small penis, asking for penile augmentation, and normal erectile function were psychologically screened and enrolled. Data of follow-up visit including patient demographics, medical history, surgical procedure, patient-reported outcomes were analysed. In all, 30 eligible persons were operated. After degloving of the penis, the suspensory ligament was incised and the tunica albuginea was fixed to the proximal tunica dartos at the penile base. Then, the dermis graft was implanted on the dorsal surface of the tunica albuginea. The file of follow-up visit was available in 17 (57%) patients. The mean age was 23.7 years (19-35 years) and the mean follow-up was 13 months (range, 4-24 months). During the follow-up period, the average gain in the penis length was 2.7 cm in flaccid and 0.8 cm in erection, respectively. And the average gain in the penis circumference was 1.5 cm in flaccid and 1.2 cm in erection, respectively. Also, psychosexual sexual self-esteem and confidence of the patients were significantly improved (p < 0.001). Overall, 13 (76%) patients reported satisfaction with the penile appearance. We believe that the surgery is both safe and effective in the enhancement of the penis, however, further clinical studies with a larger patient population are necessary.

A residue depletion study of ampicillin (AMP) was performed after oral dosing (60.0 mg/kg and 120.0 mg/kg body weight once a day for 5 days) to laying hens, through the use of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (RP-HPLC-FLD) to achieve detection of ampicillin residue in eggs. Limit of detection was 0.5 ng/g, and limit of quantitation was 1.2 ng/g for ampicillin. Extraction recoveries of ampicillin from samples fortified at 5.0-125.0 ng/g levels ranged from 77.5% to 84.6% in albumen, 77.9% to 87.5% in yolk, and 77.9% to 88.6% in whole egg, with coefficients of variation ≤ 9.3%. The maximum concentrations of ampicillin in albumen, yolk, and whole egg were detected at 1, 2, and 1 day after the last administration of ampicillin, respectively. Ampicillin was not detectable in albumen at day 9 of withdrawal time, at day 10 and 11 in yolk, and day 9 and 11 in whole egg at each of those 2 dose levels. The theoretical withdrawal time of AMP in whole egg was 6.730 and 7.296 days for 60 and 120 mg/kg oral dosage, respectively. This method also proved to be suitable as a rapid and reliable method for the determination of ampicillin in other poultry eggs.

Gallbladder volvulus, or gallbladder torsion, is a rare condition. There have been very few case reports of chronic cholecystitis complicated by incomplete gallbladder volvulus. A 63-year-old woman had suffered recurrent right upper quadrant pain for 3 years, which had grown worse during the past day. She was admitted through the emergency department on February 24, 2012. Laparoscopic exploration revealed approximately 180° torsion of the gallbladder. Postoperative pathologic examination suggested a diagnosis of chronic cholecystitis, without operative complications. Incomplete gallbladder volvulus is associated with anatomic changes to the gallbladder mesentery, constipation, and increased bowel movements. Early diagnosis and laparoscopic exploration are the keys to management.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produced by Gram-negative bacteria induces tolerance and suppresses inflammatory responses in vivo; however, the mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study we show that LPS induces apoptosis of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DCs) and modulates phenotypes of DCs. LPS treatment up-regulates expression of tolerance-associated molecules such as CD205 and galectin-1, but down-regulates expression of Gr-1 and B220 on CD11c(+) DCs. Moreover, LPS treatment regulates the numbers of CD11c(+) CD8(+) , CD11c(+) CD11b(low) and CD11c(+) CD11b(hi) DCs, which perform different immune functions in vivo. Our data also demonstrated that intravenous transfer of LPS-treated DCs blocks experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) development and down-regulates expression of retinoic acid-related orphan receptor gamma t (ROR-γt), interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-17F, IL-21, IL-22 and interferon (IFN)-γ in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-primed CD4(+) T cells in the peripheral environment. These results suggest that LPS-induced apoptotic DCs may lead to generation of tolerogenic DCs and suppress the activity of MOG-stimulated effector CD4(+) T cells, thus inhibiting the development of EAE in vivo. Our results imply a potential mechanism of LPS-induced tolerance mediated by DCs and the possible use of LPS-induced apoptotic DCs to treat autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

We have previously indicated that a new soluble calpain inhibitor, SNJ-1945 (SNJ), attenuates cardiac dysfunction after cardioplegia arrest-reperfusion by inhibiting the proteolysis of α-fodrin in in vitro study. Nevertheless, the in vivo study design is indispensable to explore realistic therapeutic approaches for clinical use. The aim of the present in situ study was to investigate whether SNJ attenuated left ventricular (LV) dysfunction (stunning) after mild ischemic-reperfusion (mI-R) in rat hearts. SNJ (60 µmol/l, 5 ml i.p.) was injected 30 min before gradual and partial coronary occlusion at proximal left anterior descending artery. To investigate LV function, we obtained curvilinear end-systolic pressure-volume relationship by increasing afterload 60 min after reperfusion. In the mI-R group, specific LV functional indices at midrange LV volume (mLVV), end-systolic pressure (ESP(mLVV)), and pressure-volume area (PVA(mLVV): a total mechanical energy per beat, linearly related to oxygen consumption) significantly decreased, but SNJ reversed these decreases to time control level. Furthermore, SNJ prevented the α-fodrin degradation and attenuated degradation of Ca(2+) handling proteins after mI-R. Our results indicate that improvements in LV function following mI-R injury are associated with inhibition of the proteolysis of α-fodrin in in situ rat hearts. In conclusion, SNJ should be a promising tool to protect the heart from the stunning.

Premature ejaculation (PE) is one of the most prevalent male sexual dysfunctions. Selective resection of the dorsal nerve (SRDN) of penis has recently been used for the treatment of PE and has shown some efficacy. To further clarify the efficacy and safety of SRDN on PE, we performed a preliminary, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical observational study. Persons with the complaints of rapid ejaculation, asking for circumcision because of redundant foreskin, intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) within 2 min, not responding to antidepressant medication or disliking oral medication were randomly enrolled in two groups. From April 2007 to August 2010, a total of 101 eligible persons were enrolled, 40 of them received SRDN which dorsal nerves of the penis were selectively resected, and those (n = 61) enrolled in the control group were circumcised only. IELT and the Brief Male Sexual Function Inventory (BMSFI) questionnaire were implemented pre- and post-operatively for the evaluation of the effect and safety of the surgery. There are no statistically significant differences in the baseline data including mean ages, mean IELTs, perceived control abilities and the BMSFI mean scores between the two groups. With regard to the post-operative data of the surgery, both IELTs and perceived control abilities were significantly increased after SRDN (1.1 ± 0.9 min vs. 3.8 ± 3.1 min for pre- and post-operative IELT, respectively, p < 0.01),whereas the post-operative results were not significantly improved for the control group (1.2 ± 0.7 min vs. 1.5 ± 1.1 min, p > 0.05). Also, there were no statistically significant differences both in BMSFI composite and subscale scores between the two groups after surgery. Hence, we conclude that SRDN is effective in delaying ejaculation and improving ejaculatory control, whereas erectile function is not affected. The results imply that SRDN may be an alternative method for the treatment of PE for some patients.

BACKGROUND: It was recently reported that some 5-HT(4)-receptor agonists increased neuronal numbers and length of neurites in enteric neurons developing in vitro from immunoselected neural crest-derived precursors. We aimed to explore a novel approach in vivo to reconstruct the enteric neural circuitry that mediates a fundamental distal gut reflex. METHODS: The neural circuit insult was performed in guinea pigs by rectal transection and subsequent end-to-end one layer anastomosis. A 5-HT(4)-receptor agonist, mosapride citrate (10-100 micromol L(-1)) (applied for a patent) was applied locally at the anastomotic site. KEY RESULTS: Mosapride promoted the regeneration of the neural circuit in the impaired myenteric plexus and the recovery of the defecation reflex in the distal gut. Furthermore, mosapride generated neurofilament (NF)-, 5-HT(4)-receptor- and 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU)-positive cells and surprisingly formed neural network in the newly formed granulation tissue at the anastomotic site 2 weeks after enteric nerve circuit insult. Possible neural stem cell markers, anti-distal less homeobox 2 (DLX2)- and p75-positive and NF-positive cells increased during the same time period. All actions by mosapride were inhibited by the specific 5-HT(4)-receptor antagonist, GR113808 (10 micromol L(-1)). CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES: These results indicate that activation of enteric neural 5-HT(4)-receptors promotes reconstruction of an enteric neural circuit leading to the recovery of the defecation reflex in the distal gut, and that this reconstruction involves possibly neural stem cells. These findings indicate that treatment with 5-HT(4) agonists could be a novel therapy for generating new enteric neurons to rescue aganglionic gut disorders.

The interactions of Pt nanoparticles, deposited by evaporation onto highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surfaces modified by kiloelectronvolt Ar+ beam treatment, have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy core-level line shape analysis. The C1s and Pt4f7/2 peaks were each considered to be composed of one asymmetric peak, and changes in their asymmetry parameters were used to study their interfacial interactions. In addition to these changes, strong signal intensity changes with time were found for both the C1s and Pt4f peaks, indicating an initial crystalline orientational instability of the Pt nanoparticles, which is supported by time-dependent high-resolution electron microscopy studies at elevated temperatures.

Using adult male C57BL/6 mice that express a yellow fluorescent protein transgene in their motor neurons, we induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) by immunization with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein peptide 35-55 (MOG peptide) in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). Control mice of the same transgenic strain received CFA without MOG peptide. Early in the course of their illness, the EAE mice showed lumbosacral spinal cord inflammation, demyelination and axonal fragmentation. By 14 weeks post-MOG peptide, these abnormalities were much less prominent, but the mice remained weak and, as in patients with progressive multiple sclerosis, spinal cord atrophy had developed. There was no significant loss of lumbar spinal cord motor neurons in the MOG peptide-EAE mice. However, early in the course of the illness, motor neuron dendrites were disrupted and motor neuron expression of hypophosphorylated neurofilament-H (hypoP-NF-H) immunoreactivity was diminished. By 14 weeks post-MOG peptide, hypoP-NF-H expression had returned to normal, but motor neuron dendritic abnormalities persisted and motor neuron perikaryal atrophy had appeared. We hypothesize that these motor neuron abnormalities contribute to weakness in this form of EAE and speculate that similar motor neuron abnormalities are present in patients with progressive multiple sclerosis.
